The Lyric Baltimore invites area students in grades 5 through 12 to attend the student matinee performance of Excellence, High Intent, on Thursday February 6, 2025, at 10:30am at Lyric Baltimore, 140 W. Mt. Royal Avenue. Excellence, High Intent runs approximately 70 minutes, and the performance will be followed by a 30-minute post-show recruitment/discussion. AileyCamp represents a vital component of Alvin Ailey’s vision: using the power of dance to enrich and positively impact the lives of children. AileyCamp Baltimore is a renowned program that offers underserved youth the opportunity to explore their passion for dance while strengthening their sense of self. By collaborating with Lyric education, the aim is to provide these talented young dancers with a chance to showcase their skills in a professional theater, while also attracting potential new Baltimore City Public School students to enroll in AileyCamp Baltimore’s summer program. Unfortunately, only 8% of Baltimore City high school students and 15% of students in grades 5th-8th receive weekly instruction in dance. Lyric education programs fill a much-needed instructional gap. Seeing a dance production in a grand, professional venue, helps students gain a visceral understanding of the work and creativity required to develop a meaningful, entertaining production as they create their own original performances.

Mission and Impetus
Education programs at the Lyric Baltimore are theater and writing-based and support the voice, agency, and creativity of Baltimore area students in grades 5th through 12th. Program participants receive acting and theater training afterschool and write original theater works performed either at the Lyric or at their workshop site. For many students, attendance at a student matinee will be their first opportunity to see a professional theatrical performance. Unfortunately, only 8% of Baltimore City high school students and 15% of students in grades 5th-8th receive weekly instruction in theater.
