1894 - Now

The Lyric’s story began in 1894 as The Music Hall, a grand new venue built to bring music and culture to Baltimore. Soon after, it became the Lyric Opera House, establishing its place as a premier home for opera and the performing arts. These beginnings laid the foundation for the diverse programming and enduring legacy that continue to define The Lyric today.

As the largest seated theater in Baltimore, The Lyric blends historic charm with modern production capabilities and guest amenities, creating a one-of-a-kind live entertainment experience. For generations, legendary performers and groundbreaking artists from opera and other popular music, comedy, dance, and family entertainment have graced our stage, including Aretha Franklin, Ringo Starr, Robin Williams, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, The Grateful Dead, and Chris Rock.

Generations of legendary performances have helped define The Lyric’s rich history. Ravi Shankar performed here in 1967 — an event remembered as the very first concert attended by Talking Heads frontman David Byrne. Pink Floyd played the only Baltimore concert of their career at The Lyric in 1972, making the venue a unique stop in the band’s legendary touring history. In 1967, The Doors took to the stage just days after their iconic appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, bringing one of rock music’s most talked-about moments directly to Baltimore audiences.

The Lyric has also inspired generations of comedians and performers. Baltimore native Stavros Halkias attended a Chris Rock performance at The Lyric as a teenager and has said the experience sparked his love for stand-up comedy. Years later, Stavros has returned several times to headline 12 performances at the venue, selling over 25,000 tickets and becoming the top-selling comedian in The Lyric’s history! 

Our commitment to the community extends beyond the stage, through programs that inspire creativity, confidence, and a love of the arts in young people. From student performances and theater workshops to programs like Dream Big, we create opportunities for Baltimore-area students to find their voice, explore their potential, and experience the power of the arts.

Today, we continue the tradition of presenting world-class music, comedy, dance, family entertainment, educational programming, and special events for diverse audiences across Maryland and beyond.
